Conditioning and updating evidence

چکیده
A new interpretation of Dempster–Shafer conditional notions based directly upon the mass assignments is provided. The masses of those propositions that may imply the complement of the conditioning proposition are shown to be completely annulled by the conditioning operation; conditioning may then be construed as a re-distribution of the masses of some of these propositions to those that definitely imply the conditioning proposition. A complete characterization of the propositions whose masses are annulled without re-distribution, annulled with re-distribution and enhanced by the re-distribution of masses is provided. A new evidence updating strategy that is composed of a linear combination of the available evidence and the conditional evidence is also proposed. It enables one to account for the integrity’ and inertia’ of the available evidence and its flexibility’ to updating by appropriate selection of the linear combination weights. Several such strategies, including one that has a probabilistic interpretation, are also provided. 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A New Conditioning Rule, Its Generalization and Evidential Reasoning
Abstract In Evidence theory, several conditioning rules for updating belief have been proposed, including Dempster’s rule of conditioning. The paper views the conditioning rules proposed so far and proposes a new rule of conditioning based on three requirements. Then, it generalizes the rule to be applied to the case where condition is given by an uncertain belief. The paper also discusses a fe...
متن کاملUpdating Sets of Probabilities
There are several well-known justifications for conditioning as the appropriate method for updating a single probability measure, given an observation. However, there is a significant body of work arguing for sets of probability measures, rather than single mea sures, as a more realistic model of uncer tainty. Conditioning still makes sense in this context-we can simply condition each mea su...
متن کاملBelief Revision and Updates in Numerical Formalisms: An Overview, with new Results for the Possibilistic Framework
The difference between Bayesian conditioning and Lewis' imaging is somewhat similar to the one between Gardenfors' belief revision and Katsuno and Mendelzon' updating in the logical framework. Counterparts in possibility theory of these two operations are presented, including the case of conditioning upon an uncertain observation. Possibilistic conditioning satisfies all the postulates for beli...
متن کاملAre Counterfactual Decisions Relevant for Dynamically Consistent Updating under Nonexpected Utility?*
This paper proposes a new updating method that preserves dynamic consistency in nonexpected utility. Given nonseparability of disjoint events, preferences conditional on an observed event also depend on counterfactual outcomes, i.e., outcomes that would have resulted outside of the conditioning event; this point has been wellunderstood in the literature. This paper argues that, as a consequence...
متن کاملUnpredictability, Probability Updating and the Three Prisoners Paradox
This paper discusses the Three Prisoners paradox in the light of three different procedures for the updating of probabilities Bayesian conditioning, superconditioning and Jeffrey's rule as well as assuming the unpredictability of receipt of information by prisoner A. The formulation of the paradox in this temporal setting brings new insight to the problem and, on the other hand, the paradox is ...
